Being pregnant is wonderful and amazing — but it can also bring some less-than-glamorous side effects as your baby grows and your organs gently shift to make space.
Many pregnant women experience constipation, heartburn, and back pain, and these symptoms can feel frustrating or exhausting. The good news is that there are simple naturopathic strategies and lifestyle changes that can help support your body naturally.
Below are some of my favourite safe, practical tips you can try at home, plus suggestions for supportive therapies if you need a little extra help.
Constipation in Pregnancy
Constipation is the number one complaint I support pregnant clients with.
It often starts in the first trimester and can continue through the second. Thankfully, many women find it eases towards the end of the third trimester, and the relief is wonderful.
Why does constipation happen in pregnancy?
In early pregnancy, your digestion naturally slows down. This helps your body absorb as many nutrients as possible to support your growing baby.
It’s actually a very clever process — but it can make bowel movements slower and less comfortable.
Constipation can also be worsened by:
- Dehydration
- Hormonal changes
- Reduced movement
- Pressure from your growing baby on the digestive organs
Many people also don’t realise that hydration needs increase during pregnancy. Because your body creates extra blood volume, you need around 3 litres of water per day.
Natural ways to relieve constipation in pregnancy
These simple habits can make a big difference:
- Eat two kiwis a day – this is one of the most evidence-supported natural remedies for constipation
- Drink plenty of water – your urine should be pale yellow
- Start your morning with warm water and lemon – this can gently stimulate digestion
- Increase vegetables – ideally half your plate should be vegetables (white potatoes don’t count!)
- Take your time on the loo – use a small footstool to improve posture and practice slow breathing
- Keep moving – even gentle daily walking helps stimulate digestion
- Drink herbal teas – peppermint or ginger can support digestion (1–2 mugs per day is enough)
Heartburn and Reflux in Pregnancy
As your baby grows, your stomach and digestive organs are pushed upwards, which can lead to heartburn or reflux.
Some of the same strategies that support constipation can also help reduce heartburn.
Helpful tips include:
- Drinking warm lemon water in the morning
- Staying well hydrated
- Eating smaller meals more frequently
- Drinking peppermint or ginger tea
These herbs can help soothe digestion when used in moderate amounts.
Nausea in Early Pregnancy
Nausea can be one of the most challenging early pregnancy symptoms.
A simple trick many women find helpful is to keep oatcakes or crackers beside the bed and eat a small amount as soon as you wake up.
Other helpful strategies include:
- Eating little and often
- Drinking peppermint or ginger tea
- Infusing fresh ginger or peppermint in cold water
- Inhaling lemon or ginger essential oils (always check safety in pregnancy and use high-quality oils)
If you are experiencing frequent vomiting, speak with your midwife or GP. Severe nausea may be Hyperemesis Gravidarum, and medical support may be needed to prevent dehydration.
Back Pain in Pregnancy
Back pain is very common, especially in the later stages of pregnancy, when your body is carrying extra weight and your posture changes.
This can be particularly challenging if you are caring for other children, working long hours at a desk, or walking a dog regularly.
Ways to support your back
Try these simple adjustments:
- Sleep with a pillow between your knees to support your hips and spine
- Avoid stacking multiple pillows under your head, which can strain your neck
- Check your desk posture if you work sitting down
- Place a small cushion behind your lower back for lumbar support
- Try sitting on an exercise ball instead of a chair (make sure it’s the correct size)
- Stand up and move regularly throughout the day
- Take a warm Epsom salt bath in the evening to relax muscles
Therapies That Can Help During Pregnancy
Natural therapies can be very supportive during pregnancy when provided by someone properly trained.
Pregnancy reflexology can help support:
- digestion
- heartburn
- stress
- circulation
- overall wellbeing
If you choose reflexology, make sure you see someone qualified in pregnancy reflexology.
Essential oils may also be helpful, but always check that they are safe for you before using them.
