Preparing for Pregnancy: Signs Your Body Might Need Extra Support

By June 11th, 2026No Comments

This title might sound a little scary at first, but this topic is so important if you’re thinking about preparing for pregnancy and having a baby.

Your body is incredibly good at communicating when things aren’t quite in balance — especially when it comes to hormones, fertility and pregnancy. Yet many women are told that symptoms are “normal”, brushed aside, or left feeling frustrated, anxious or defeated when trying for a baby doesn’t happen as quickly as expected.

The good news? These signs aren’t there to scare you. They’re information. And when you understand what your body is trying to tell you, there is often so much you can do to support it.

Because preconception health isn’t just about getting pregnant — it’s about staying pregnant and creating the healthiest environment possible for both you and your future baby.

Signs your body might need extra support before pregnancy

Irregular cycles or changes to your period

Your menstrual cycle gives us so much information about what’s happening hormonally.

Signs that things may need a closer look include:

  • Irregular cycle lengths
  • Very heavy or very light bleeding
  • Spotting between periods
  • A short luteal phase (the time between ovulation and your period)
  • Significant pain
  • Changes in blood colour or flow patterns

Your period is often one of the first places hormone imbalances show up, so it’s worth paying attention to.

PMS that’s affecting your quality of life

PMS is common, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s something you simply have to put up with.

Mood swings, breast tenderness, headaches, severe cramps, bloating, anxiety, or feeling like a different person for part of every month can all suggest that hormones may need more support.

Persistent acne or hormonal skin changes

Hormonal acne can sometimes be another clue that hormones aren’t working together as smoothly as they could be.

Hormones are processed and cleared through multiple systems in the body — including the liver and gut — so when those systems are under extra pressure, it can sometimes show up through the skin.

Low energy, burnout and stress

If you’re constantly exhausted, running on caffeine, struggling to sleep, or feeling permanently stressed, your body may be prioritising getting through the day over optimising fertility.

Chronic stress can affect hormone signalling, ovulation, sleep quality, blood sugar balance and energy production — all of which matter when preparing for pregnancy.

Thyroid symptoms

The thyroid plays a huge role in fertility, ovulation and supporting a healthy pregnancy.

Symptoms that can sometimes point towards thyroid imbalances include:

  • Fatigue
  • Feeling cold frequently
  • Hair thinning
  • Constipation
  • Changes in weight
  • Low mood
  • Irregular cycles

Thyroid issues are common — and often overlooked.

Digestive issues and microbiome health

Your gut health matters more than most people realise when it comes to fertility.

Bloating, constipation, diarrhoea, IBS symptoms, food sensitivities, recurrent thrush, frequent antibiotic use, or digestive discomfort can all suggest your microbiome may need some support.

And microbiome health doesn’t just matter in the gut — vaginal and urinary microbiomes play important roles too.

Conditions like PMOS (PCOS) or endometriosis

Conditions such as PCOS, now known as PMOS – Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome, endometriosis, adenomyosis and other hormonal conditions can affect many of the symptoms above.

But having one of these diagnoses doesn’t mean pregnancy won’t happen. It often means your body may benefit from additional support and a more personalised approach.

The important part: these things can often be supported

And I say this with my hand on my heart — there is so much you can do.

I don’t say that lightly. I’ve lived it myself.

I experienced significant hormone imbalances and had to spend time supporting my own health before pregnancy. I approached myself exactly as I approach my clients: looking at the bigger picture, understanding what my body needed, and giving it time. Within six months, things looked very different.

That experience is one of the reasons I’m so passionate about helping women look beyond “everything is normal” and actually understand what’s happening.

Support might include:

  • Dietary changes
  • Targeted supplementation
  • Functional or private testing to look deeper into underlying drivers
  • Improving sleep quality
  • Reducing stress levels
  • Supporting gut and microbiome health
  • Nervous system regulation and breathing work
  • Hands-on therapies such as reflexology

And importantly — you do not have to do everything.

Sometimes small changes create big shifts.

Your body isn’t broken. Sometimes it’s simply asking for more support before pregnancy.
