What Makes a Naturopath Special During Preconception to Postpartum?
So, what makes a Naturopath who specialises in the journey from preconception to postpartum a little bit different?
This does.
A Naturopath’s work is unique because it’s defined by a set of guiding principles—not by the individual therapies we’re trained in. This means that whether I use Nutritional Therapy, Reflexology, or help you understand your baby’s sleep, my approach is always rooted in Naturopathic philosophy. There are six core principles; I won’t list them all here, but I will share how they shape the way I support you.
1. First and foremost: do no harm
This is the foundation of everything I do. I will never go against medical advice, diagnose conditions, or suggest you stop medication. It also means I won’t offer advice without fully understanding you. Naturopathy treats the individual, not just the symptoms, and my aim is always to uncover the root cause of what’s going on.
For example, if you come to me with an unsettled baby who seems to have digestive discomfort, I won’t simply point you toward colic remedies. Instead, I’ll explore the full picture:
- How was your pregnancy and birth experience?
- Are you breastfeeding or formula feeding?
- If breastfeeding, how is it going—any pain or latch issues?
- How much caffeine are you drinking?
- If bottle feeding, which bottles, teats, and formula are you using?
- How do you hold the bottle during feeds?
- How much time does your baby spend in the pram, on the floor, in a sling, or being held?
- How and where does your baby sleep?
All of these factors—and more—can influence your baby’s digestive system.
Creating a plan that truly fits you
Once I understand your full situation, I can create a personalised plan for you and your baby. A follow-up session might include:
- Baby massage techniques
- Herbal tea suggestions
- Reflexology
- Breastfeeding positioning support
- Pace-feeding guidance
- Discussing sling use, co-sleeping, or routines
- Formula options
- Probiotic recommendations
- And referrals to other therapies that may complement our work
My goal is to empower you
What’s perhaps most unusual is that my aim is for you not to need me for long. I want to give you the knowledge, tools, and confidence to support yourself and your baby independently. Education and empowerment are at the heart of my approach.
